Chapter ยท 6:47-7:31

Erin and the Ottoman capital-ship order

The Ottoman order that became HMS Erin brought an Orion-derived battleship into the eastern Mediterranean naval rivalry.

Notes

Erin was a modified Orion or King George V type ordered for the Ottoman Navy. Her 13.5-inch guns, 21-knot speed, and 26,500 shaft horsepower put her among the more potent ships ordered in 1911. Such an Ottoman acquisition was expected to prompt a Greek response. The design therefore links British capital-ship technology to competitive procurement in the eastern Mediterranean.
