After Eugene Ely's demonstrations, designers were still testing what a shipboard aviation layout should look like. One concept placed paired island structures around a central gap through which aircraft would take off and land, an arrangement compared onscreen with HMS Furious. The former Ark Royal, by then named Pegasus, represents a different branch: aircraft could fly from the ship but could not land back aboard. Its reliance on seaplanes for recovery, together with the growing difficulty of launching larger aircraft from its short deck, shows why launch-only vessels remained distinct from true aircraft carriers.

Early layouts separate carriers from seaplane ships
Early split-superstructure concepts and Ark Royal's launch-only deck clarify the operational boundary between true carriers and seaplane carriers.
