Flight I and Flight II Burkes were designed around carrier task-group operations. They could land and refuel a helicopter, but lacked the hangars later flights used to support two aircraft. The original fleet concept assumed that carriers would supply substantial aviation support. Aegis-equipped Burkes would reinforce Ticonderoga cruisers and proposed strike cruisers against incoming missile attacks. Independent frigate duties and convoy escort were assigned elsewhere in that fleet concept.

Early Burkes as carrier task-group ships
Early Burkes combined Aegis air defence with limited helicopter facilities because their expected role centred on carrier task groups.
