Eagle's four torpedo hits leave little time for damage control

Eagle's rapid loss during Operation Pedestal shows how torpedo hits distributed along the hull can overwhelm stability before repair parties have time to act.

Notes

Eagle took four torpedo hits during Operation Pedestal and sank in about four minutes. The surrounding force was already dealing with repeated submarine contacts and air attacks while trying to protect the convoy. A spread of hits along the hull opened multiple compartments, allowing rapid flooding and an increasing list. Damage concentrated at the bow and stern could have left more useful buoyancy amidships, but widely distributed breaches removed that margin. With so little time available, evacuation offered a more realistic objective than extensive repairs. The loss killed 131 officers and crew, mainly from the propulsion-machinery spaces. A near-immediate abandonment order is suggested as a reason many others escaped.
