Adding a generating shed on deck appears easier than reaching machinery spaces beneath an old dreadnought's existing structure. That location introduces noise and exposes another installation to gun blast and heat. The generator itself also need not occupy an enormous compartment: its rotor and stator are compared in size with a Ford Fiesta. A dreadnought can contain that volume, particularly if the refit removes barbettes. Choosing where to install the machinery therefore involves protection and access as well as finding enough space.

Where to put extra generators during a dreadnought refit
A generator on deck avoids difficult access below, but noise, blast, and heat complicate that apparently simple refit option.
