A double-ended dock can make carrier entry safer and faster

Opening both ends of a dock gives displaced water more room to escape, reducing resistance as a large ship enters.

Notes

A large carrier pushes a considerable mass of water ahead of it when entering a confined dock. With only one outlet, that displaced water must squeeze through a narrow space and resist the ship's movement. A double-ended layout lets the flow spread across a larger area and makes the approach more stable. The practical gain is modest: slightly faster, more controllable docking.
