France's disjointed industry and railway investment

France combined a large agricultural sector with substantial but geographically disconnected industry.

Notes

Interwar France retained a large agricultural base alongside important industries in separated regions. Those industrial areas lacked strong connections with one another. France's economic problem was therefore geographical integration rather than an absence of manufacturing. That pattern helps explain the country's heavy investment in railways as national economic infrastructure.
