Why Discovery's perfect machinery seems unconvincing

Chief O'Brien's engineering problems make Star Trek more believable, while Discovery's reliable experimental technology invites criticism.

Notes

Chief O'Brien's engineering work is a particular strength of Deep Space Nine because machinery needs attention. Discovery invites the opposite criticism: a newly assembled ship often seems to run perfectly despite using technology beyond the cutting edge. Some of its stories remain enjoyable despite that objection. New machinery revealing faults would make the experimental ship more convincing.
