Would diesels require a new hull form?

A brief design question separates modest changes to the outside of the hull from the more important rearrangement of machinery inside it.

Question

Would an all-diesel installation require major changes to the ship's hull form?

Short answer

Only modest external changes would be needed; the substantial redesign would be the internal machinery layout.

Notes

Only modest changes to the outer hull form would be needed to preserve speed. The larger redesign lies inside the ship, where the machinery layout has to accommodate multiple engines, gearboxes, shafts, and their compartments. An all-diesel proposal therefore does not automatically require a wholly new hull family. It still demands serious internal design work even when the external hydrodynamic form can remain broadly familiar.
