Sir Eustace d'Eyncourt recalls an unusual continuity between Nelson's design and construction. As Director of Naval Construction, he was responsible for the design under the Admiralty Board's instructions and signed the drawings issued to the builders. After leaving the Admiralty, he signed those drawings for Armstrong Whitworth, Nelson's contractor. This placed him in a position to supervise both the original design and its construction. Detailed plans were developed with the other contractor under Admiralty supervision, with assistance from William Berry and the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors.
