Deutschland and Scharnhorst: speed, power and endurance

Compare the Deutschland class's diesel endurance with the higher top speed and shorter quoted range of Scharnhorst.

Notes

The Deutschland-class figures given here are 26 knots maximum speed and 10,000 nautical miles at 20 knots. Eight diesel engines supply a quoted 53,000 shaft horsepower. Scharnhorst is compared at 31 knots, with twelve boilers and three steam turbines. Two range figures are offered for the latter comparison, 7,100 and 6,200 nautical miles at 19 knots. These figures introduce the distinction between maximum speed and the speed a ship can sustain over a long deployment.
