Could a 1940s destroyer carry a seaplane by sacrificing torpedoes and guns, and how effective would it be?
Short answerIt was technically possible and repeatedly tried, but the result was ineffective in both roles.
NotesThe United States and the Netherlands tried putting seaplanes aboard destroyers; Swedish experiments are also recalled, with less certainty. The aircraft installation left an ineffective destroyer without producing a sufficiently useful seaplane carrier. Three Fletcher-class conversions gave the Americans enough examples to test whether the difficulty lay in an individual ship or in the concept. Pringle, Stevens, and Halford are subsequently identified as the ships modified during construction to carry catapults.
