The Daring class as an electrical and machinery experiment

The eight British Daring-class destroyers split AC and DC generation across paired machinery arrangements, turning a production class into a comparative engineering trial.

Notes

The Tribal, Battle, and Daring classes are distinguished from more conventional J-, K-, N-, L-, and M-class fleet destroyers because they embody more unusual design choices. Limits in the Tribal and Battle classes are acknowledged before the Darings are described as a thought experiment. Four of the eight British Daring-class destroyers used alternating-current electrical power and four used direct current. Combined with their machinery variations, those choices produced four paired configurations. The arrangement allowed propulsion and generation systems to be compared through ships in operational service without betting the whole class on one solution.
