Chapter · 34:35-38:22

The Daring class completed the move to general-purpose destroyers

Postwar Daring-class ships combined guns, torpedoes, air defense, and anti-submarine weapons in the larger hull needed for both fleet combat and peacetime presence.

Notes

Peacetime again required ships with enough room to entertain visitors and enough visual presence for worldwide visits. Wartime experience demanded stronger anti-aircraft and anti-submarine capabilities. The Daring class combined 4.5-inch turrets, a heavy torpedo battery, air-defence weapons, and anti-submarine mortars in a hull about 75 percent larger than the Tribals. HMCS Haida in Canada and HMAS Vampire in Australia survive as museum ships from the Tribal and Daring lines. In this account, no British or Battle-class examples are known to survive. The Tribal, Battle, and Daring classes form an evolutionary line from specialised torpedo-boat destroyers toward the modern general-purpose surface combatant.
