When a damaged merchant ship still counted as success

Cargo delivery, rather than a ship's later survival, was the convoy's central measure of success.

Question

How many Malta convoy ships were damaged badly enough to need repairs?

Short answer

For the supply mission, a merchant ship that remained afloat and delivered its cargo could still count as a success, even if it limped into Malta and became a loss in harbor.

Notes

Merchant-ship readiness was not judged like a warship's combat availability. A badly damaged freighter could still fulfil its purpose if it reached port with usable cargo, and some vessels counted among the losses appear to have survived the passage only to sink in harbour. Cargo could still be salvaged from a ship sunk after arrival. Convoy statistics therefore measure logistics outcomes as well as ship survival.
