Funding the British Army in Germany and maintaining carriers were presented as alternatives even though the wider strategy required both. CVA-01 could have shared aircraft and supporting systems with American and French carrier forces. Cancellation forced Britain to rebuild parts of the same capability through a more independent Harrier and Invincible-class path. The operational requirement persisted because 3 Commando Brigade and British and Dutch reinforcements still had to reach Norway through enemy air attack. Cancelling the platform shifted the cost of its mission into a new development programme.

CVA-01 commonality versus reinventing carrier capability
Cancelling CVA-01 sacrificed allied aircraft commonality, yet Britain still had to develop ships able to protect reinforcements moving toward Norway.
