CVA-01 drawings preserve a lane outside the island so aircraft could move from the after deck to launch positions during flight operations. The route enlarged the flight deck while reserving a strip that could not serve ordinary parking or landing. Moving the island farther outboard and sequencing launches between recoveries could have restored more flexible deck space without a dedicated bypass. CVA-01's bypass lane illustrates how technically clever geometry can still solve the wrong operational problem.

CVA-01 preserved an elaborate answer to deck traffic
CVA-01's route around the outside of the island moved aircraft forward without interrupting flight operations, but consumed valuable deck area to solve a traffic problem more simply handled by layout and timing.
