CVA-01 substantially postdated the conceptual development of the angled flight deck. The unusual geometry in surviving drawings can make the design appear more experimental or earlier than it was. Separated launch and recovery paths were already understood when the carrier was designed. Its odd deck plan was therefore an attempt to refine modern operations rather than a precursor to the angled-deck idea.
