Major engine replacement means opening the ship

Warship machinery cannot usually leave through normal access routes, so a deep refit cuts through the hull or superstructure to exchange major power units.

Question

Must a warship be cut open to replace its engines?

Short answer

Usually yes; major machinery is embedded inside the structure, as shown by Type 45 work that opened the ship for new power packs.

Notes

A complete machinery change usually requires opening the ship. Large engines and power packs are installed within the structure and need a temporary route out when removed. Contemporary images of a Type 45 destroyer with its side opened for new power machinery show the scale of the work. Propulsion modernization is therefore a major industrial project rather than routine maintenance.
