Was it harder in the Second World War to convert civilian ships or to build fleet vessels from scratch?
Short answerConversion is often technically harder, but it can be much easier on shipyard capacity and therefore useful in a rapid expansion.
NotesA conversion can be harder to make work as a fighting vessel, yet it may demand far less specialized infrastructure than building from the keel up. Replenishment fittings, for example, can be added in a fitting-out dock or alongside. That work does not consume the same major-yard capacity as new construction. Scarce building slips can then concentrate on escorts and other purpose-built warships.
