A nominal minelaying auxiliary could be designed around a future flight deck and hangar. Its superstructure and funnels would be arranged for movement to the side. Mines, boats, or guns could initially obstruct the deck, while the space intended for a hangar served as a mine store. At mobilization, removing those obstructions would reveal a carrier layout prepared in advance. The conversion could then be presented as an unexpected dockyard achievement.
