The American FREMM derivative is larger and carries useful missiles and sensors, yet its 57 mm main gun is a questionable choice for presence work. Presence depends partly on visible capability: historical ships were carefully presented to look effective when entering foreign ports. Because U.S. commitments will force Constellation-class ships into independent cruiser work, gun arcs and diplomatic effect matter alongside missile performance. The comparison with the awkwardly placed gun on the Oliver Hazard Perry class shows how a weapon's position and appearance can matter in coercive diplomacy as well as its specifications.
