What could replace the Constellation-class frigate program

Cancelling Constellation would deepen delays because the design already adapts FREMM to American needs; Type 26 is the only plausible live alternative at comparable scale.

Question

What should the US Navy do if Congress cancels the Constellation-class frigate?

Short answer

It should avoid cancellation if possible; otherwise Type 26 is the strongest live alternative, but switching would still delay delivery.

Notes

The panel's preferred course is to finish the Constellation design and build it. Returning to a nominally off-the-shelf FREMM would not restore the original production line and could simply recreate much of the same American redesign under another name. Type 26 offers the clearest alternative because Britain, Canada, and Australia sustain an active family of related programs. Initial American ships might even come from a hot British line while a US yard trained and tooled up. Even that option would add delay, making cancellation a poor substitute for disciplined completion of the existing frigate.
