Several firms keep naval aircraft roles evolving

The Nimrod, Osprey, and Seal show a competitive design network feeding fighters, shipborne reconnaissance, and increasingly versatile carrier aircraft.

Notes

The Hawker Nimrod, Hawker Osprey, and Fairey Seal entered service amid further orders, specifications, and aircraft trials. The Osprey adapted the Hawker Hart for shipborne work, especially from cruisers. The light-bomber label covered aircraft used for attacks resembling dive bombing, including the Hart and Osprey. The Seal continued the spotter-reconnaissance line and already showed features associated with a later aircraft generation. Blackburn, Hawker, Fairey, Parnall, and Supermarine all remained involved in naval aviation, giving the Navy several firms from which to seek its next designs.
