Commonality collapsed as design changes accumulated

Quoted reporting puts FREMM commonality at about 85 percent initially and roughly 15 percent after extensive alterations.

Notes

The parent-design approach was intended to preserve enough of FREMM to save design time and reduce technical risk. Reporting quoted in the discussion put commonality at about 85 percent early in the program and roughly 15 percent after the alterations. An August 2021 description compared the derivative to a larger but essentially similar house; the April 2024 figure described a much more distant relationship. The looser 70/30 comparison used earlier in the lecture is explicitly a more generous estimate that includes framing and outward similarities. Neither estimate is presented with a detailed measurement method. The conclusion drawn from the reported decline is that the Navy had effectively undertaken a new frigate design while retaining the language of a modified repeat.
