Why combined-cycle propulsion remains rare at sea

Using gas-turbine exhaust heat to raise steam can improve efficiency, but the resulting marine plant introduces more systems and damage-control concerns than navies have accepted.

Notes

A combined-cycle plant recovers exhaust heat from a gas turbine to produce steam for another turbine, an approach valued in land-based power generation. The recovered energy can improve total efficiency because one engine's hot exhaust becomes the heat source for another cycle. Variations work in cruise ships, yet no naval ship has adopted the full concept. Extra piping, fluids, and machinery create more failure and damage paths. A plant that behaves well ashore or in civilian service may be much harder to protect, isolate, and repair after a warship is hit.
