CODLAG removes the diesel generators' direct mechanical connection to the propeller shafts. Their electrical output drives motors for routine cruising, giving designers more freedom over where to place the generating machinery. A gas turbine supplies the high-speed part of the operating envelope when the electric motors reach their practical limit. Hypothetical American carriers and capital ships show why long-range cruising with occasional high speed might favour this division of labour. The electrical separation also leads into the later discussion of integrated electric propulsion.

How CODLAG separates generators from the shafts
CODLAG uses diesel generators and electric motors for economical cruising, then brings in gas-turbine power when higher speed exceeds the motors' practical range.
