Cockatoo Island's small output concealed strategic value

Cockatoo Island's modest launch total included some of Australia's most demanding locally built warships and preserved capabilities larger than the count suggests.

Notes

Cockatoo Island built cruisers, Tribal-class destroyers, River-class frigates, and other complicated vessels for Australia. The yard produced only about thirty ships between 1912 and 1990, which makes its long career look marginal when judged by launches alone. Those orders included some of the most technically demanding types attempted by Australian industry. Intermittent construction at one enduring yard preserved capabilities that its numerical output does not convey.
