Why did Coastal Command employ so many Avro Ansons instead of relying only on flying boats?
Short answerFlying boats were more expensive and took longer to build, so Ansons offered a quicker way to expand patrol-aircraft numbers.
NotesCost was only one constraint on the flying-boat force; production time also mattered. Large patrol flying boats could not be expanded as quickly as simpler landplanes, even when their range and water-operating ability were desirable. Avro Ansons provided aircraft numbers for patrol work while the more capable flying-boat force remained limited. The ideal aircraft for a mission may differ from the force a procurement system can field in time.
