Chapter · 2:26-4:14

A service built for many maritime roles

The Coast Guard's safety, security, stewardship, law-enforcement, and rescue roles explain why its cutters also become diplomatic instruments.

Notes

This opening maps the unusually broad portfolio inherited from the Revenue Cutter Service: defense readiness, law enforcement, migrant interdiction, port security, environmental protection, navigation aids, and search and rescue. A cutter working regularly around neighbouring waters cannot avoid being seen as a national representative. Calls at foreign ports and operations near Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean islands therefore created diplomacy even without a formal presence mandate. The video uses that everyday presence to frame its argument about deployments overseas.
