Reclassifying old destroyers as coast-guard ships

Removing torpedo fittings and assigning defensive coast-guard identities could preserve useful destroyer hulls outside the main battle fleet.

Notes

The proposal looks for treaty-compliant identities for fast ships below 2,000 tons. Removing torpedo fittings would strip older destroyers of their clearest offensive feature while leaving their machinery and speed intact. Rebranding them as coast-guard or sloop-like vessels could justify continuing service outside the main battle fleet, even if they were not cheap to operate. Distributing formations to British, South African, Indian, and other coast-guard organizations would preserve hulls and operational experience under a defensive label. This explicitly speculative device shows how classification and assigned role can shape what survives a disarmament regime.
