Which Civil War observers did European armies listen to?

The attention paid to returning European observers could depend on the prominence of their assignments rather than the military lessons they had witnessed.

Notes

European officers served with both Union and Confederate forces, but their reports did not attract equal attention. In this interpretation, those who served with Grant received comparatively little notice. Officers attached to conspicuous staffs in quieter commands attracted more interest. That imbalance could distort European understanding of the war even when firsthand observers were available.
