Trading speed for a tougher, harder-hitting Chester class

The revised Chester class sacrifices three knots for stronger flooding protection, heavier guns, larger torpedoes, and a fleet-wide survivability standard.

Notes

The refit adds stronger anti-flooding protection, double hulls, reinforced bulkheads, heavier guns, and 22-inch torpedoes. The class retains minelaying and depth-charge capabilities, so combat resilience improves without sacrificing its secondary missions. The extra protection and weapons push the design overweight, making a reduction from 36 to 33 knots the decisive trade. Gun firepower rises by roughly 50 percent, and the speed loss is accepted because the revised ships should survive flooding better. The comparison between Fairmile craft and Schnellboote warns that famous wartime exploits can make one design choice look more attractive than its production tradeoffs justify. Range also improves, and roughly half the light-cruiser fleet can receive the refit. The completed 11,000-ton variant draws more water but remains stable, showing how the survivability package changes more than headline speed.
