Why rapid change feels uneven

Internet-era communication presses societies with different strengths and preferences to adapt at the same pace.

Notes

The pace of invention and the pace of adoption are different problems. Before near-instant global communication, communities could absorb change at different speeds. The internet brings those uneven rates into direct contact and creates pressure for the whole world to adjust together. A place that moves quickly in one area may move slowly in another, so rapid change is experienced differently across societies. Those differences also preserve some of the variety that makes travel worthwhile.
