Chapter · 18:25-20:32

Caspar John's carrier career and CVA-01 politics

John's aviation, attaché, and carrier experience fed the political coalition that kept the CVA-01 carrier program moving during his tenure.

Notes

Caspar John's career moved through naval aviation, work connected to the Third Sea Lord, service as naval attaché in the United States, and command of escort and light fleet carriers. That range made him the kind of politically capable officer who might have filled the gaps in Henry Harwood's staff. As First Sea Lord, John balanced the CVA-01 carrier proposal against Royal Air Force and wider government interests rather than presenting it as an isolated naval demand. The program survived during his tenure, but his successor failed to preserve that settlement and resigned after the carrier was cancelled.
