Why the carrier remains the sustained combat element

Aircraft carriers remain valuable for both strike and sustained combat because their aircraft can extend missile reach, break up attacks, and be rearmed at sea.

Question

Could future missile cruisers replace carriers as the primary strike element, leaving carriers mainly as the sustained combat element?

Short answer

No. Carriers remain part of both roles because aircraft add launch range and approach options, while the carrier can be replenished at sea in ways that vertical-launch cells currently cannot.

Notes

A launcher's weapon load is only one part of the kill chain. Carrier aircraft can carry long-range weapons farther from the task group and approach from changing directions, while also intercepting enemy strikes before they reach the fleet. The carrier is therefore a strike platform and a day-two or day-three sustainment asset. Its ability to receive more aviation weapons at sea contrasts with the difficulty of reloading a surface combatant's vertical-launch system away from port.
