How did Royal Navy overstretch and earlier carrier losses affect Force Z?

Losing Courageous, Glorious, and Ark Royal removed the reserve capacity that might have placed a carrier with Force Z.

The survival of even one earlier carrier could have freed another hull for the Far East, while two survivors would make carrier support much more likely. The three losses arose from failures in escort, employment, or damage control rather than proving that British carrier doctrine was generally backward.
