Carrier-launch requirements shaped the Vigilante's performance

The A-5 had to launch by catapult without wind over the deck while retaining the speed and maneuverability needed for strategic penetration.

Notes

The design requirement called for catapult launch even without the carrier steaming into the wind, alongside high speed and maneuverability. Its internal weapon arrangement minimized drag, while optional external stations could carry two additional nuclear weapons. The planform is compared with the MiG-25, with the tentative argument that the Soviet interceptor answered very fast threats such as carrier-launched Vigilantes. The rear-ejection system could release unexpectedly during the violence of launch and contributed to at least one aircraft loss.
