Carrier landings consume airframe life

The violence of routine arrested landings shortens aircraft life and helps explain why old carrier airframes are poor bargains even before combat losses are considered.

Notes

CATOBAR operation offers access to more aircraft types, but carrier service imposes unusually severe structural demands on those airframes. Every arrested landing consumes airframe life even when the pilot performs it correctly. The Supermarine Seafire provides the historical example: many operational losses resulted from deck landings and the punishment they imposed rather than enemy action. Aging carrier aircraft are therefore less attractive purchases because their remaining fatigue life may be too short to justify adaptation and support costs.
