Carrier fires and damage made Taranto a problem of timing and resilience

Illustrious lost aircraft to a hangar fire and Eagle suffered fuel-system bomb damage, yet weather and astronomical conditions made postponing Taranto costly.

Notes

Aircraft carriers concentrate fuel, machinery, flammable material, moving equipment, and people in a confined space, so fire is a recurring operational hazard rather than an unprecedented failure. A hangar fire aboard HMS Illustrious destroyed three aircraft, while bomb damage left HMS Eagle temporarily unable to manage aviation fuel. Both problems were serious but repairable, and Eagle returned to strikes soon afterward. Taranto nevertheless depended on a narrow combination of Italian fleet location, moonlight, visible stars, cloud, and navigation conditions. Together the cases show that carrier operations depend on damage control, replacement capacity, and timing as much as on the planned air group.
