CVA-01 deck studies and Invincible's single island

CVA-01's deck studies, wartime lessons about cramped islands, and a cruiser-to-helicopter-cruiser evolution all feed the design culture that produced Invincible.

Notes

CVA-01's proposed aircraft-routing arrangements show how operating concepts shape a carrier's deck. One debated idea would route recovered aircraft around the outside of the island to prepare them for another launch, although its eventual adoption is doubtful. A 1970s alternative would not naturally adopt the later Queen Elizabeth class's twin-island solution, which appeared late even in that design process. Royal Navy experience with cramped wartime carrier islands instead encouraged a large single island for many years. After CVA-01 was cancelled, cruiser studies evolved into helicopter cruisers and then the Invincible class. Carrier design work continued through this politically acceptable cruiser program.
