Chapter ยท 56:01-1:00:27

One Galaxy hull can fill several wartime roles

The original Galaxy total may suit exploration, but a common hull becomes more valuable when Starfleet needs carriers, heavy cruisers, and other capital combatants.

Notes

Thirteen hulls might support a limited exploration mission, but the figure becomes inadequate once the same design supplies major combatants. The source traditions also disagree over whether Magellan or Abraham Lincoln belongs among the first commissioned ships and whether fifteen or sixteen hulls would have made more sense. A common Galaxy hull can remain an explorer, lose science spaces for a dreadnought or battle-cruiser fit, retain command facilities as a heavy cruiser, or become a carrier. Wolf 359 and the Dominion crisis make continued production more practical than waiting through another long development programme. The class becomes the basis of Starfleet's large-ship force rather than a small fleet of specialists.
