Carrier airpower as deployable infrastructure

Aircraft carriers are defended as mobile air bases when land-based combat aircraft require infrastructure that cannot be created safely or quickly.

Notes

The argument challenges the claim that an army needs air support while aircraft carriers are dispensable white elephants. The difficulty of transferring F-16s to Ukraine provides an infrastructure example: different aircraft require suitable bases, support systems, and operating arrangements, and building those during a war creates a target. A carrier brings much of that enabling infrastructure with the aircraft instead of waiting for access to a prepared land base. Carrier aviation is especially relevant when support is needed quickly or in regions without friendly facilities. A future carrier air group could mix crewed aircraft such as the F-35 with uncrewed systems.
