Why a Canberra-class F-35 conversion is not simple

Operating F-35s would require weapons, magazine, and sustainment changes designed out of the Canberra class, far beyond use of its ski-jump bow.

Notes

The ski jump does not by itself make an amphibious ship an aircraft carrier. Canberra retained the ramp because it belonged to the parent design, while the aviation infrastructure needed for F-35 operations was deliberately omitted. A serious conversion would require changes to weapons handling, magazines, sustainment spaces, and support arrangements deep inside the ship. Retrofitting those features would approach the cost of a new build rather than a minor flight-deck upgrade.
