The design begins with hull form and machinery efficiency before moving to weapons, protection, and endurance. Weight savings make room for three- and six-inch secondary batteries intended to stop small attackers from closing unopposed. Some pitch and range are accepted in exchange for strong damage control and enough stability for the intended role. The finished Canada class combines 15-inch main guns, a 32-knot maximum speed, and a cruising range of about 12,000 kilometres. It is intended to become the pattern for later fast battleships.
