Cammell and Laird had worked together on naval projects for years before their 1903 merger. Sheffield supplied iron, steel, and armour, while Birkenhead remained the shipbuilding centre. The order list shown for 1900 to 1924 includes a battleship ordered before the merger and a succession of cruisers after it. Pathfinder and Patrol appear alongside HMS Melbourne among the yard's naval work. Their established working relationship made the combined company a familiar supplier to the Royal Navy.
