Calabria as a compact protected cruiser

The Italian protected cruiser Calabria becomes a compact example of how much mixed armament could be carried on a 2,700-ton colonial-era warship.

Notes

Calabria displaced only about 2,700 tons but carried four 5.9-inch guns, four 4.7-inch guns, numerous lighter weapons, and two 18-inch torpedo tubes. The protected cruiser also served in the Italo-Turkish War, where she performed well. Her compact hull and varied armament typify the dense mixed batteries fitted to small cruisers around the turn of the twentieth century. The watch point provides historical context for a ship encountered during the campaign.
