The Burke can become the default model for every surface ship

The Burke-default hypothesis asks whether familiarity with one combatant has displaced clear thinking about a frigate's separate role.

Notes

Alex Clarke distinguishes selecting a ship name or slogan from deciding its required capabilities before production. Drachinifel suggests that a navy long accustomed to Burkes may begin to imagine every surface combatant as a version of the same ship at another displacement. That is a proposed explanation for Constellation's expanding role, rather than a documented instruction to its designers. The resulting alternative is openly hypothetical: a conventional Zumwalt could take the general-purpose destroyer role, with a Burke variant concentrating on ASW. The example tests fleet roles without supplying a worked design or cost estimate.
