BS100 thrust promised performance at a control cost

A comparison with the Phantom's Spey engines sets the BS100's projected 33,000-pound thrust against the harder pilot-control problem it created in vertical flight.

Notes

The surviving BS100 makes the program's technical ambition concrete. Its stated 33,000 pounds of thrust compares with about 20,500 pounds from each reheated Spey fitted to the British Phantom. That power was available in a test engine rather than a production installation, and controlling it during short or vertical takeoff would have placed demanding loads on the pilot and flight-control system. The engine's thrust figure still had to be turned into a safe, controllable fleet aircraft.
