Keeping equipment from treaty-scrapped battleships

Almost anything could probably be retained once the ship was taken out of service, although the exact restrictions and enforcement are uncertain.

Question

Under the naval treaties, could the Royal Navy keep guns, turrets and other equipment from battleships being scrapped?

Short answer

Almost anything could probably be retained once the ship was taken out of service, although the exact restrictions and enforcement are uncertain.

Notes

Removing the ship from service is treated as the main treaty requirement. Guns, turrets and most other equipment could probably be put into storage, although how closely compliance was checked remains uncertain. Scrapping also failed to produce the financial return some politicians expected. So many ships had already been broken up after World War I that scrap prices were extremely low. Selling more battleships into that market brought little money and could approach the point of paying someone to dismantle them.
